Vineyard Professional Services (VPS) is in search of an Assistant Vineyard Manager to join our team of vineyard experts. We are based out of Paso Robles but farm vineyards in 3 counties on the Central Coast, so some flexibility in vineyard assignment locations is available. The ability to collaborate and work as a team to achieve common goals is critical to success.
The Assistant Vineyard Manager plays an important role in the execution of general vineyard management work. The position requires broad skills and knowledge in the areas of pruning, irrigation management, weed control, chemical applications, disease and pest control, cultivation, vine balance, canopy management, and harvest. Assistant Vineyard Managers and Managers are expected to work as part of the management team and respect the company values and chain of command. Assistant Vineyard Managers report directly to their assigned Vineyard Manager.
Primary Job Duties
- Assists the Vineyard Manager with planning and execution of vineyard management plans
- Assists the Vineyard Manager in the supervision of field crews, assuring proper procedures and quality of work
- Assists with employee training in safe practices and ensures safety rules are followed.
- Constantly learns & enforces SLO County Pesticide and Cal OSHA compliance protocols
- Maintains communication with Field Staff, Vineyard Managers, and Field Foremen
- Assists and takes a lead role in harvest operations
- Assists in vineyard development activities as directed by the Vineyard Manager including trellis & irrigation system installation, planting, etc.
- Aids in the coordination of equipment, trellis and irrigation repairs and the acquisition of repair parts with third-party vendors
- Input field scouting and phenological data into MS Excel and Google Drive
- Manage electronic irrigation and fertilizer input logs
- Assists in monitoring and maintaining weather stations and soil/water sensors
- Expected to work independently and be able to diagnose vineyard health issues and suggest cultural operations when appropriate
- Direct & oversee field workers with ranch operation tasks
- Maintain a truck stocked with the necessary parts, safety supplies, and replenishable water
Requirements, Physical Demands and Work Conditions
- Must have a valid CA driver’s license and the ability to be insured
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50lbs
- Able to operate farming equipment and implements on flat land or hillsides
- May be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, farming chemicals and fertilizers
- Requires working outside in all weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat and cold in some cases
- Requires complete mobility (walking, bending and stretching) in the vineyard on uneven terrain
- Ability to work up to 6 days a week for 8-10 consecutive hours outdoors
- Ability to report to work in early morning hours
