CFO (Williams Selyem Winery)
Job Summary:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will serve as a key member of the executive team, responsible for leading the financial strategy and operations of the winery. The CFO will oversee all financial planning and budgeting, accounting, compliance, reporting, and risk management functions as well as overseeing Human Resources.
This position is part of the small and collaborative Williams Selyem Leadership Team which runs the day-to-day operations and reports directly to ownership. This role requires a dynamic individual with solid financial expertise, deep knowledge of wine industry and best practices, and the ability to navigate a competitive and evolving marketplace.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Planning:
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the winery's business goals and long-term growth objectives.
- Lead financial forecasting, budgeting, and reporting processes to ensure fiscal responsibility and organizational success.
- Partner with ownership and executive team to evaluate new business opportunities, including acquisitions, vineyard expansions, and new product lines.
- Annually creates a budget and capital expenditure plan with other Leadership Team members for approval by the Chairman and Board that proposes the wineries business plans and strategies.
Financial Operations & Reporting:
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and performance reports for stakeholders, including investors, lenders, and regulatory agencies.
- Ensure compliance with financial and tax regulations, including adherence to federal, state, and local winery-specific tax requirements (e.g., excise taxes).
- Create monthly reporting that identifies key winery issues and summarizes monthly and YTD financial performance versus budget for the Chairman’s review and approval, and participates in monthly management meetings to discuss issues raised.
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory management.
- Develop, manage and oversee all banking relationships, and is responsible for all related bank communication and transactions including reporting for bank covenants and borrowing base requirements.
- Oversee cash management processes to ensure cash availability and best practices in cash management.
- Manage the winery inventory costing system to ensure that product costs are accurate and properly reflected in financial systems.
- Oversee and provide reporting support for the annual audit and tax return work completed by outside CPA firm.
Risk Management & Compliance:
- Manage financial risk by implementing effective controls, monitoring financial performance, and maintaining strong internal audit practices.
- Ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations, including TTB reporting requirements.
- Oversee insurance programs and safeguard winery assets.
Team Leadership:
- Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and excellence.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with winemaking, sales, marketing, and operations teams to drive financial results.
Strategic Initiatives:
- Support growth initiatives, including evaluating capital investment projects, debt financing, and cost optimization strategies.
- Analyze financial trends and market conditions to provide data-driven recommendations for decision-making.
- Develop and maintain relationships with banks, investors, and external auditors.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s degree or CPA preferred).
- Proven track record of success, including 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, with a minimum of 3 years in the wine industry.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of winery financial management, including cost accounting, vineyard operations, and wine inventory valuation.
- Expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, and strategic planning.
- Proficiency in financial software systems.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Willing to get involved in all details of the business as this is a small company.
