The Skills Shaping Wine’s Next Era

Job Seekers • By Editor •

From AI and vineyard technology to changing consumer expectations, the 2026 WIN Expo offers a look at the skills and expertise shaping the future wine industry workforce.

The wine industry is changing, and the skills needed to succeed within it are changing, too. As wineries face tighter budgets, shifting consumer demand and new technologies, employers are reconsidering not only how they operate, but what they need from the people behind their businesses.

For hiring managers and industry professionals alike, the challenge is looking beyond today's job descriptions to understand what skills will be valuable in the years ahead.

On December 3, the 14th Annual North Coast Wine Industry Expo (WIN Expo) will bring together thousands of wine professionals at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa for a day of industry education, innovation, and networking.

Its 2026 conference program, The Next Era of Wine: Strategies to Adapt & Create New Opportunities, offers something equally relevant to workforce development: a look at how the industry's most important roles are evolving.

A Changing Industry Requires an Evolving Skill Set

Across four conference tracks—Winemaking & Production, Sales & Marketing, Strategy & Leadership, and Viticulture—industry experts will examine challenges with direct implications for the wine industry's workforce.

In the Strategy & Leadership track, AI in Action: Practical Tools, Real Winery Use Cases & Smarter Workflows will demonstrate how AI is already being used in winery sales, marketing, data analysis and business operations.

As these tools become more accessible, skills such as interpreting data, evaluating technology and integrating new workflows may become increasingly valuable across departments.

The Sales & Marketing track raises a different set of workforce questions. Sessions including DTC Reinvented: What 500 Wineries Reveal About Clubs, Loyalty & Collaboration and Effective Marketing on a Budget: Building Brand Equity Through Consistency, Clarity, and Authenticity examine how wineries can strengthen customer relationships and maintain visibility with limited resources.

For sales, hospitality and marketing teams, that places greater emphasis on customer retention, creative collaboration, effective storytelling and better use of customer data.

Meanwhile, the Viticulture track will explore advanced Red Blotch detection, perennial ground covers and the economics of vineyard transition—highlighting the growing value of professionals who can combine traditional vineyard knowledge with technology, research and financial decision-making.

Even winemaking is evolving alongside consumer preferences. Sessions exploring alternative white varietals, chillable reds and wines favored by the next generation of industry professionals reflect the need to balance technical expertise with an understanding of changing markets.

Together, these conversations point toward a workforce that will need to be increasingly adaptable, technologically capable and comfortable working across traditional departmental boundaries.

The Trade Show Floor Offers a Look at These Changes in Action

With more than 250 exhibiting companies representing nearly every sector of the wine business, the WIN Expo trade show floor offers a firsthand look at the technologies, equipment and services changing how work gets done across the industry.

Companies such as InnoVint, IntelliCulture, Bonsai Robotics, Agrofocal Technologies, Bottle360 and BevZero reflect just how broad that innovation has become—from winery management software and vineyard analytics to agricultural automation, AI-powered monitoring, DTC technology and emerging beverage production.

But the show floor isn't only a place to discover new solutions. Several WIN Expo exhibitors are also currently hiring, creating another opportunity for professionals exploring their next move—or considering where their skills might fit within the evolving wine industry.

Building the Workforce for What's Next

Technology is only part of the equation. The wine industry will continue to depend on experience, relationships, creativity and specialized knowledge—but how those skills are applied is evolving.

Bringing winery owners, executives, winemakers, vineyard managers, sales professionals and industry suppliers together creates an opportunity to see how others are responding to those changes and where new expertise may be needed.

For employers, that can help inform hiring priorities, employee training and how roles may evolve. For professionals, understanding where the industry is headed can help identify the skills worth developing and the opportunities worth pursuing.

Ultimately, the workforce question heading into 2027 isn't simply whether wine businesses have enough people to meet today's needs.

It's whether they're hiring, training and developing the people they'll need for the business of tomorrow.
